4 New Mystery Games For July 2025
And some hints about what I'm secretly working on!
Before we get into today’s list of games, I want to mention a couple things I’ve been working on:
The topic I wanted to discuss today is taking a lot longer to research than I expected, so it’s not quite ready. Rather than rush the article, it’s best to save it for next time. But it has been very fascinating and insightful, so look forward to another statistical deep-dive next week!
I’ve been very busy working on a new educational series of videos on mystery game design. If you enjoyed my talk at VN;Conf 2024 then you’ll love what I’ve been cooking up behind the scenes. That video might only be 20 minutes, but I’m in the process of recording nearly 20 hours of content! So I greatly appreciate your patience — you won’t find a more comprehensive suite of videos on mystery games anywhere else! Stay tuned to this newsletter to be the first to know!
Now then — here’s a short but sweet list of 5 mystery games released (or soon to be released) in July 2025:
Back to the Dawn
Back to the Dawn is a story-rich RPG set in a high-security prison ruled by factions and buried secrets. Investigate two conspiracies from the inside, gather evidence, and outsmart a system designed to silence you. Make friends (or foes) with fellow inmates and with their help, break out of prison.
The premise of solving mysteries from inside prison is interesting enough. But with a combination of impressive visuals, a complex storyline, and replayable gameplay, there’s a lot to enjoy. With over 4,000 positive reviews, it’s clearly a game worth checking out.
The Drifter
A Pulp Adventure Thriller - A murdered drifter awakens. Alive again, seconds before his death. Hunted and haunted, help him untangle a mad web of conspiracy in this fast-paced point 'n click thrill-ride.
I tried out the demo for this point-and-click adventure in the most recent Next Fest and it was definitely one of the best. The pixel art and animations are simply incredible and create a highly immersive experience.
Uberich: Advent Sinners
The world and reality of Joe collapse as a sequence of paranormal events starts in September. A mysterious girl with physical powers named Chava wants him dead, as he can be a core key for her cult to dominate the reality between worlds.
An ambitious episodic game that claims to “transcend the visual novel genre” with a very clean and appealing anime art-style. According to the game’s website, the complete story of Uberich: Advent Sinners will include over 5,500 illustrations, 80 soundtracks, and a 2-million word storyline.
No Sleep For Kaname Date
Iris has been abducted by aliens?! Finding herself on board a mysterious UFO and tasked with completing a bizarre escape game, Iris knows there's one person who she can always count on for help: Kaname Date, Psyncer!
Spin-off of the popular series AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES. Conduct investigations and solve escape-room puzzles. Its release is just around the corner, so keep an eye on it!
BONUS: Although not yet released, I came across a very interesting cross between the social deduction and cooking game genres called Ghost Kitchen. Love to see it!
