It’s time for a quick roundup of mystery games released in August, 2025:
极速营救 (Extreme Rescue)
Ex-cop's life shatters when kidnappers take his daughter, implant a bomb, and force him on lethal missions. With enigmatic allies, his choices rewrite destinies while unraveling a conspiratorial web.
Chinese FMV games have been doing really well this year, and 极速营救 (Extreme Rescue) continues the trend. The game includes an English translation with subtitles, so I was able to quickly take a look at it before writing this article.
This game is a blend of action-thriller and throws you right into the action from the start. Although it is mostly just watching the movie play out, there are various points where you can make decisions to branch the story, short interactive investigation sections, and quick-time events during action sequences.
The production quality is overall really good for an FMV game, especially involving a story with so much action. The game does cover a lot of mature topics, so be warned.
Deep Sleep: Labyrinth of the Forsaken
What dreams are made of is the stuff of nightmares in this new point-and-click adventure. Delve deep into realms both fantastical and terrifying, and use the power of lucid dreaming to solve puzzles, explore, and contend with eerie adversaries in your search for the brother you thought had died.
A standalone entry to the Deep Sleep series, this point-and-click adventure game has the really unique premise of investigating a mystery using lucid dreaming.
Some elements of the game world, including the puzzles, are procedurally generated, which forces each individual player to really think in order to solve them. The game also includes turn-based combat sections for additional challenge. Meanwhile, the high-quality art and sound work greatly to create a highly immersive atmosphere.
Secrets of Blackrock Manor
Find the hidden fortune of Blackrock Manor. Discover the truth about the family deaths. In this mysterious Escape room, you will have to solve puzzles to find the hidden vault with the treasure. But you will find much more...
This game is a pretty straightforward escape room game. Your goal is to search for a long-lost treasure in the manor by solving the puzzles the guard each room. As you solve puzzles, bits of the story are revealed, indicating the truth about what happened to the family that once lived there.
Whisper of Y'Ryando
Whisper of Y'Ryando is a Lovecraftian puzzle-solving game that showcases a layered papercraft aesthetic. In this game, players will uncover the ongoing stories of the town through a unique perspective, acquiring hundreds of clue fragments by rolling dice.
This game features an interesting mechanic the developers refer to as “Theory of Clues”, which focuses more on organizing clues as opposed to collecting them. You roll the dice to acquire clues, with the task of making sense out of what you’re given.
It seems like the game avoids hand-holding the player, as learning how the rules of the game work seems to be part of the game. It’s also designed with replayability in mind. Some reviews have compared the game to Cultist Simulator.
Wildwood Down
Step into the hilariously twisted world of Wildwood Down, a side-splitting comedy thriller. Featuring a protagonist with Down Syndrome. (Inspired by and voice acted by the Dev's childhood friend!) Perfect for fans of the P-n-C adventure genre and new comers looking for a wild heartfelt ride!
Last but not least, in this game the story’s main character suddenly uncovers a murder mystery and must search for his missing sister before it’s too late.
I’m really blown away by this game’s production value. The scenes are rendered in 3D with a charming pixel art sprite aesthetic, and the cinematography looks like you’re watching a carefully directed movie the whole time. The characters are great, the dialogue is very funny, and it’s clear that this game was made with a tremendous amount of passion and love.
